INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2

For task 2, Mr. Vinod gave us three articles for us to choose to typeset them. We need to use ID to typeset and design the articles, and we need to design the title to express its meaning in AI.

Research

Before starting my homework, I looked up some interesting cases about typography on the Internet in order to find inspiration.

Sketches

This is my sketch. I've designed the title. I'm going to do it in circles.

I tried to draw the title in the AI.

After designing the title, I turned my attention to the typography of the article. In ID, I tried different typography and presented it.

LAYOUT

I made two types of typesetting for the article. In the first type of typesetting, I did not distribute many paragraphs of the article, and each paragraph of the article was relatively long, which I think can make readers pay more attention. In the second type of typesetting, I did not design graphics for the title, I just wanted to make the letters orderly scattered, so I also scrambled the article.

In the sixth week, the teacher commented on our homework and gave us feedback. The font of my article was very compact, the line space of paragraphs was too narrow, and the title was not very creative. So I adjusted the spacing of paragraphs and lines, and re-adjusted the composition.

After feedback, I re-typeset the article, adjusted the paragraph spacing and evenly adjusted the characters.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6

General Feedback:The title doesn't need to stand out and should be in the same font to make it look smoother to the reader. Appropriate adjustment of text layout, in the text layout should be adjusted to the appropriate distance of 5mm margins. Specific feedback:The column width is too tight, there should be more distance, the spacing of the letters is uneven, and the length of the text is too large.

WEEK 7

General Feedback:The task should be submitted according to the given template and modified to complete task 1. In task 2, the meaning of the title should be expressed. The title is important. Specific feedback:Task 2 paragraph spacing is too large, pt should be entered when entering line spacing, the idea of heading is not good enough.

week 8

General Feedback :It was an independent study week and we got on with our task.

REFLECTION

Experience

In this task, I have a better understanding of the software ID, and I have mastered the function of using ID simply through the lecture video. However, I still have many shortcomings in the composition and design of articles, and there is no good and special design. I still had a lot of trouble with the layout and formatting of the text, but I made some progress with this exercise.

Observation

In this task, I found that the title is important in the whole text. The title is the beginning of the whole article, which represents the whole text. It can attract readers and make them want to continue reading the article. Then, through the observation of other students' homework, I found that a simple element can play a great role, such as a letter in the title deformation to make the title more attractive, a simple rectangle can make the article segmentation. But what matters more in the design and layout of text is the meaning of the letters themselves, rather than the goodness or badness of the design.

Findings

From task 2, I learned that the most important thing in an article is how to make the reader read well. The first thing we should do is to make the reader interested in reading, and the title design is an important factor. In the design of the title, it is designed on one side of the article to attract more readers, if placed randomly will have the opposite effect. We should arrange the title and text reasonably, so that readers can read smoothly.

FURTHER READING

Fig 5.1 The Vignelli Canon

The author of this book is a book written by Massimo Vignelli, a famous Italian writer. He has rich experience in graphic design and product design. This book is about the guidance of design principles.

The book tells about v's views on its design, and focuses on the important role of introduction, typesetting, grid and color design in society.

Fig 5.2 The Vignelli Canon

Syntactic consistency is of paramount importance in graphic design as it is in all human endeavors. Grids are one of the several tools helping designers to achieve syntactical consistency in graphic design.

This passage in the article benefited me a lot:

Throughout our creative lives we have sifted through everything to select what we thought best. We sifted through materials to find those for which we have the closest affinity. We sifted through colors, textures, typefaces, images, and gradually we built a vocabulary of materials and experiences that enable us to express our solutions to given problems - our interpretations of reality.

I think this book has deepened my understanding of design and what kind of design the society needs. We should meet the needs of the society and use design to improve our lives.
