Lecture 1 / AdTypo_1_Typographic Systems

In this video, Mr Explains to us that design is actually a system, divided into eight different structures.

There are eight categories:

  • Axial
  • Radial
  • Dilational
  • Random
  • Grid
  • Modular
  • Transitional
  • Bilateral
Figure 1.1 systems 3/9/2023

  • Axial
The Axial system is a linear system, I think it is a linear axis, and we carry out regular layout and design around this axis.

Figure 1.2 Axial 3/9/2023
  • Radial
The system is centered around a focal point, and when we design, we focus our vision on this point to make people more observant.

Figure 1.3 Radial 3/9/2023
  • Dilational
The system, which is separated by layers of circles, is able to classify different pieces of information and focus the important ones.

Figure 1.4 Dilational 3/9/2023

  • Random
The system is chaotic, but it is also neat and regular within the chaos.

Figure 1.5 Random 3/9/2023

  • Grid
This grid system, he is composed of different positions within the grid typesetting.

Figure 1.6 Grid 3/9/2023

  • Transitional
The Transitional system is a hierarchical and directional system that helps to direct information to a particular area.

Figure 1.7 Transitional 3/9/2023

  • Modular
This is a standard system for separating text vertically and horizontally.

Figure 1.8 Modular 3/9/2023
  • Bilateral
All the text is arranged on either side of two axes, which looks regular but boring.

Figure 1.9 Bilateral 3/9/2023

Finally, it may be difficult at first, but as you become more proficient, you will gain experience and understand the uniqueness of these systems.

2.Final modification

Under your guidance, I modified all my contents, adding colors to them and re-typesetting them. My bilateral and modular are not well recognized, so I redesigned them and modified them based on their characteristics.

EXERCISES 2
Type and Play

We need to look for a picture of an object, find their hidden letters in the picture of an object, find them and analyze them.

1.Progress

I chose this leaf, it has a very special grain, I want to study and analyze it.

Figure 1.1 image (13/9/2023)

I extracted the lines in the picture and showed them.

Figure 1.2 image (13/9/2023)

I extracted the words in the pictures and drew them. I think the grain of the leaf is bifurcated, it has many bifurcations, and it is also extremely irregular, and I show this characteristic of it. And made several attempts.

Figure 1.3 try (13/9/2023)

After listening to your advice, I realized that the font I chose was too limited and could not be improved, but I could choose another way to redesign this font. It is also a good way to express the texture design of the font on the letters. And re-extract the texture in the image.
Figure 1.4 Extract texture (16/9/2023)

After extracting the texture I put the texture into the font for design

3.Placard

My letters are designed by the texture in the leaves, so when I was looking for an image, I chose a large area of fallen leaves to match my letters, which would make my picture more harmonious.

Feedback

week 2
General Feedback:Words with some color will be better, in the random system, should be scrambled each sentence, show the main points, do grid system should make the picture more tidy.

Specific Feedback: The Axial system has more lines, which looks very messy, and should be maintained in one line. The rest of the design is difficult to express the characteristics of each system. Radial is OK

week 3
General Feedback:The graphics should be kept uniform, uppercase and lowercase should be the same, and we should choose similar letters when selecting pictures. Specific Feedback:There is nothing I can do to improve my letters, but I can choose another method, I can use the crack to express its characteristics, follow the other method better.

week4
General Feedback:The font design must make sense to us, the font design that doesn't make sense is wrong.
Specific Feedback:The size of the poster should be corrected to 1024*1024, the background picture of the poster should be the same as the font style of the design, the texture of the font style design is the leaf, the background picture should be similar to the leaf style.

Reflection

Experience

In this task, we carried out two different projects. The first exercise required us to design different typesetting systems. During the design process, I had a great understanding of the system design of typesetting, and knew how to design and change the eight structures of typesetting, as well as the diversity of typesetting systems. In the second exercise, we need to design fonts and find fonts in daily life. I chose a golden leaf to extract the lines from it and engraved the lines back on my font. In the design process, I was not satisfied with my first design, so I changed the lines of the leaves into letters, which made the font look strange and there was no room for improvement. Under the guidance of my husband, I chose one of the two other methods and engraved the lines on the letters, so that the letters looked more interesting.

Observation

In the first exercise, several layout systems were studied. In the process of research and design, each layout system expressed different designs in different typesetting processes, and each design gave different visual information and had different functions in the process of typesetting. In the second exercise, I studied the design of fonts. This project needs to find the visual perception of design in life. There are many unexpected designs in natural life.

Findings

Through Mr. Wang's guidance and practice, this project emphasizes the diversity of layout and design, and different expression systems should be used to convey different messages.
