INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1 - PROPOSAL

The first step was to establish a team of six people. Ye xinyan, Li yanxi, Nadhrah, Myra and Azariff and I formed a team. We decided that Azariff would be the team leader.

We began the task of discussing this proposal on the topic of Research: Cultural Sensitivity in Design. We had a group discussion via Whatsapp and everyone came up with different opinions.

After discussion, we decided to study: the color design of Chinese culture (red, yellow, white).

We needed to make a Google Slides to describe our proposal. Me, Ye xinyan and Li yanxi took on the task of making the slides, while Nadhrah, Myra and Azariff sketched out the post-production recording and ideas.

1. What do you think about Chinese Red, Chinese white and Chinese Yellow?

Red is the representative color of China. It is found on the Chinese flag. Red can be said to be the representative color of China.White clothes in China are worn to commemorate the deceased, which is not very auspicious.Yellow in China is a color other than red in the national flag. If red is the representative color of China, yellow is one of the embellishment colors.

2. How do you feel about it?

Red gives me a brave feeling and I think this color can give me courage and confidence.Yellow gives me a very bright, smart feeling.White gives me a feeling of paying homage to those who have passed away, and gives me a sadder feeling.Yellow gives me a bright, smart feeling.

3. What kind of location 、items, you'll seeing these color?

In China, red often appears on signboards or pennants. Yellow is used in some buildings or historical and cultural relics, such as the yellow glazed tiles of the Forbidden City. And during Tomb Sweeping Day, people wear white to remember their departed relatives.

4. What do red, yellow and white represent to you?

Red represents China, yellow represents star intelligence and glory, and white represents mourning.

5. Please share an example of a time in your life where you often see or use red, yellow, and white.

In traditional Chinese festivals such as the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, people use red decorations, lanterns, couplets, etc. to create a festive and lively atmosphere. Some brands and logos choose yellow as their main color because of its ability to attract attention and make a lasting impression. Yellow is often used in commercial advertising and logos.White is suitable for a variety of clothing styles and occasions, such as white shirts, white T-shirts, white skirts, etc. Often seen as a fresh, simple and elegant choice.

6. What are the restrictions or taboos on the use of red, yellow and white in Chinese culture?

Red is often seen as an inappropriate color in funerals and memorial services as it is the opposite of festive and may appear disrespectful. Yellow is also associated with land, burials, etc., so in some cases yellow is seen as associated with funerals and may be avoided in mourning situations. White may be avoided during some celebratory and festive occasions.

7. In traditional Chinese festivals, what celebrations or decorations are red, yellow and white usually used for?

During the Spring Festival, every household will decorate their houses with red lanterns, spring couplets, window grilles, etc., and wear red clothes. Yellow is also often used as a decoration during the Spring Festival, such as golden ornaments, gold ingots, etc., to welcome wealth. White words may also be used during the Spring Festival, but relatively rarely. They are usually used in some decorations matched with red to increase the solemnity of the festival.

8. Which color items do you personally prefer to choose in your daily life? Why?

I prefer red in my daily life, because Chinese colors are not only very eye-catching but also give me a very warm feeling.

9. For Chinese people of different ages, the symbolic meanings of red, yellow and white may be different. What do you think accounts for this difference?

Older individuals, in my opinion, have a stronger sense of connection to traditional culture and a deeper comprehension of the symbolic connotations of colours like red, yellow, and white. The younger generation's view of these colours may alter since they are more influenced by external factors and current society.

10. In Chinese culture, how are the uses of red, yellow, and white different in architecture, interior decoration, and clothing?

Red is often used as a decoration for tiles, door and window frames, etc. in Chinese architecture, especially in traditional palaces, temples, and temples. Therefore, red architectural elements usually have power and auspicious meanings, and yellow is also used in interior decoration. Often used as a decorative color, yellow furniture, curtains, etc. often represent wealth and abundance, adding a sense of warmth and comfort to the home. White is also common in traditional clothing, especially at weddings and funerals, where white clothing often represents purity and sanctity.

1. What do you think about Chinese Red、Chinese white、Chinese Yellow?

I think Chinese red is the most representative of China, and China’s national flag is also red. The color white in China generally represents mourning and not-so-good things. Yellow in China symbolizes wealth.

2. How do u feel about it?

The red color of China makes me feel vitality and a fighting spirit, which is very warm. The white color of China makes me feel sad and nostalgic. Yellow in China makes me feel rich and powerful.

3. What kind of location 、items, you'll seeing these color?

In China, red things can be seen on cheongsams and Tang suits. Couplets and red envelopes are also classic red. Yellow generally appears on Tang suits and cheongsams. Yellow is also used in many traditional items to indicate that it is a symbol of wealth and is used to attract wealth. The most white ones are used in funeral scenes, as well as funeral wreaths, spiritual tablets, etc.

4. What do red, yellow and white represent to you?

Red represents good luck, wealth, and prosperity to me. Yellow represents wealth and longevity. White represents sadness.

5. Please share an example of a time in your life where you often see or use red, yellow, and white.

During the Chinese New Year, red couplets, lanterns, and clothes are everywhere. Yellow can be seen on many Feng Shui items that attract wealth or in temples, because it represents wealth and luck. I have only seen white at funerals. There are white decorations everywhere, with white hats and white clothes.

6. What are the restrictions or taboos on the use of red, yellow and white in Chinese culture?

Neither red nor yellow can be used in funerals as they will conflict, especially red. White cannot be used on weddings, as it will cause conflict, is taboo, and is particularly unlucky.

7. In traditional Chinese festivals, what celebrations or decorations are red, yellow and white usually used for?

Red is usually used on Spring Festival couplets, banners, cheongsams, Tang suits, lion dances, etc. Yellow usually appears during the Spring Festival, and there are many traditional festivals that also incorporate yellow. The Mid-Autumn Festival has the most yellow, which symbolizes membership and prosperity. White is usually worn at funerals.

8. Which color items do you personally prefer to choose in your daily life? Why?

I prefer yellow and red because it is not so unlucky, and it also has a lucky meaning and feels like it can attract wealth. Of course there are white clothes, but they are relatively rare. They are usually skirts and have no special meaning.

9. For Chinese people of different ages, the symbolic meanings of red, yellow and white may be different. What do you think accounts for this difference?

It may be because each age and experience is different, so the understanding at each stage is different, which is normal.

10. In Chinese culture, how are the uses of red, yellow, and white different in architecture, interior decoration, and clothing?

Both red and yellow represent festive colors, so they are used in many meaningful clothes or decorations, and they are widely used. If white does not have much meaning, it is usually applied to decorated walls or skirts, or some simple furniture. Red and yellow are generally more prominent colors, so it is often necessary to highlight its culture and show it in some iconic festivals, costumes or locations.

Reflection

After studying this module, I feel very lucky. My team members work together very well and can complete our tasks on time. When we first got the topic, our task was to discuss "cultural sensitivity in design". Our group members had members from different countries. When I thought we would have different opinions or communication difficulties when talking about this topic, But with everyone's hard work, we overcame the difficulties and finally completed it, and I am very happy about it.
After completing this module, I also learned the importance of the two words culture and design. Cultural sensitivity is also an important part of design, and we need to pay attention to it so that we can make designs that are in line with the public.
